  Islámská symbolika a terminologie raperů není záležitostí současnosti, ale objevuje se už v samotných počátcích této subkultury. Hnutí Zulu Nation nebo kapely Public Enemy, Poor Righteous Teachers a Brand Nubian se velmi sebevědomě a otevřeně hlásily k islámu, budeme-li se ale zabývat detaily a souvislostmi, zjistíme, že ve většině případů se jedná o vlivy sekt Nation of Islam nebo 5% Nation.  Názory a výrazy (převážně 5% Nation) těchto hnutí mezi rapery převládá, a spíše se jedná jen o "sympatie" než o aktivní členství.

Tento stereotyp působí o to ničivěji tam, kde je reklamní obraz v zásadním rozporu se skutečností ". Úvodní text z anotace ke knize Toni Morrison "Nejmodřejší oči" poukazuje na životní realitu Afroameričanů a jakým způsobem ovlivňovala jejich pohled na sebe sama. Téma knihy zrecyklovalo brooklynské duo Black Star v roce 1998 ve skladbě "Thieves In The Night" a citaci použili pro refrén své skladby.  Pohled Toni Morrison je zaměřen nejen na Afroameričany obecně, ale ve svém příběhu klade důraz na ženskou stránku a upozorňuje tím tak na přehlížené téma historie amerických černochů. Oproti tomu rapeři Mos Def a Talib Kweli nerozlišují své poselství, ale mluví v obecné rovině a jejich důraz je na akceptování skutečnosti jací jsme a neočekávat potvrzení a schválení z vnějšku, že jsme "v pořádku". “A fantazie to byly, ne...

Film " Killer of Sheep " kalifornského režiséra Charlese Burnetta z roku 1977 se dostal znovu do povědomí v roce 2009, když rapper Mos Def (dnes známý pod jménem Yasiin Bey) použil jeden záběr pro cover svého alba " The Ecstatic ". Hned o rok později natočil Kahlil Joseph video " Belhaven Meridian " pro Shabazz Palaces, které je poctou Charlese Burnettovi.

‘La Vie Est Belle / Life Is Beautiful’ represents the first full expression of what Yannick Ilunga calls ‘Noirwave’, which is more of a concept than a specific sound.  Inspired by innovators like Mos Def and legends Fela Kuti and Tabu Ley, Noirwave encompasses a ‘new African aesthetic’.
