Pohledy byly adresovány  Gloria Owens, sekretářky hnutí Nation of Islam. Část pohledů je z konce 50. let, kdy Malcolm X cestoval po USA a kázal v modlitebnách hnutí NOI. Převážná většina je ale z roku 1964, tedy na sklonku Malcolmova života, kdy cestoval jak na Střední východ, tak ale i do Evropy nebo Afriky a vykonal pouť do Mekky (duben 1964). Zajímavostí je, že pohled z roku 1958 zobrazuje stereotyp Afroameričana. Rovněž je zajímavé, že Malcolm všechny pohledy zasílal Glorii Owensové i v době, když už nebyl členem NOI (rozchod z hnutím proběhlo v březnu 1963). zdroj: Nate D. Sanders
