Since the modern Arab Awakening, which soon swept across the entire  Muslim world, with the efforts of Jamal al-Din al-Afghani (d. 1897CE)  and Muammad ‘Abduh (d. 1905CE), the Muslim masses have used the  slogan of ‘application of Islamic shariah´ to propound to the masses,  the alternative which they hoped would take them to the enjoyment of a  free and honourable life.  Every member of the Muslim masses, all over the  world, aspires to the day when Islamic shariah will be applied in a manner  that can remove political and social injustice, realize freedom and dignity  for the human being, and pave the way to good deeds and noble  conduct in order for these principles to become the bases of life in Islamic  society, nay, in the whole of human society.

  A documentary portrait of James Baldwin, one of the towering figures of 20th-century American literature, Black culture and political thought, filmed in Paris. The iconic writer is captured in several symbolic locations in the city, where he was living at the time, including the Place de la Bastille.   foto: výřez z obrazu Jana Smetany "Rok 1945 v Praze" (1945) ”Dnes, v rámci 31. výročí 17. listopadu jsem seděl s řetězem prorektora na krku v Karolínu během shromáždění představitelů vysokých škol. Za normálních okolností by to byl vlastně až fantastický zážitek, takto jsem měl pocit fraškovité ubohosti a důkaz o tom, že všechno lze zmanipulovat a že etická hlediska existují jen ve světě abstraktním, nikoliv v tom, v němž žijeme. S hrůzou si uvědomuji, že opravdu jsou jen dvě eventuality: být buď lovcem, nebo lovnou zvěří. Zbývá snad třetí možnost: být filosofem, který nic neočekává, má minimální potřeby a požadavky, je si vědom marnosti světských věcí a žije vlastně vně tohoto světa. Ovšem vnucuje se otázka: Je to potom skutečný, plnokrevný život? Není to jen vznešená forma sebeobelhávání, sebeklamu, jenž je náhražkou pravého života?
